The greatness of Nelson Mandela challenges us all
AMONG Nelson Mandela’s many achievements, two stand out.
He was the first politicical thinker I recognised on TV. I must have been four or five, and we were taught that Africa is all about safari and lions. And I remember watching him on TV, and decided, that he was Africa.
Years later, I was happy to think that Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, and the likes are out there, working on the betterment of humanity, unafraid from imprisonment, challenging current mainstream politics, and changing the course of history.
He was, in some sense, a reason to believe that things can get better. Now he passed away, a beacon of hope, a change-maker,for millions. I can’t help but feel sorrow over his death although I was never so lucky to see him speak in person. Yet his message about equality lives on, an inspiring guideline for us all.
